Spiritual Formation

"Connecting Christ and Community To Advance the Kingdom of God"

Located at the corner of North High and East Market Street.

The Salem United Methodist Church attempts to do a few things well. We believe one's relationship with Christ and involvement in the church should be a positive experience. We invite you to come and join us for worship and Christian growth opportunities in the community setting and experience how the spirit of God can direct us to grow together.

We don't place stock in the numbers game. We don't pressure people to join the church. The Kingdom of God is an "offer" not a demand. Sacrificial love, not fear is the God given motivator of the heart.

Spiritual growth is emphasized through the practice of individual and community spiritual disciplines. The ultimate focus is on Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God. As Christians we promote practicing the words of Jesus that we are to love the Lord with our very being and also love our neighbors as ourselves. We constantly seek renewed vision and direction as the Holy Spirit leads.

We believe as Christians one must grow spiritually. Growth for many people in today's world needs to occur by subtraction as they need to learn to remove the unnecessary and focus on Christ and what matters in life. We offer several spiritual formation opportunities to draw closer to the Lord.

2002
Our church outing to St. Meinrad Archabbey provided an opportunity to learn about the monastic life. Our outing to "The Temple" Synagogue provided the opportunity to dialogue with Rabbi Rapport about Judaism.

2003
In 2003, the women raised funds to construct a sister church in the city of Tenke located in Congo, Africa. Pictured is Congo Bishop Ntambo Nkulu holding the check from the women’s group.

2004
In 2004, we sponsored an art exhibit and contest. Works were submitted by Salem High School students based on the text passage Luke 19:28-24:12.

2006
In 2006, we took a work team to help repair hurricane Katrina damaged homes in Gulfport, Mississippi.

2007
Terry Amick, a Messianic Jew, from Chosen People Ministries, shared with our congregation and took questions as we gained a better understanding about our faith from the Jewish perspective. In 2008 Terry will share the Jewish Passover meal with us during the season of Lent.

Special Services
Ash Wednesday Evening Service - The imposition of ashes to begin the season of Lent.

Lenten Meals - During the season of Lent we have three Wednesday evening pitch-in fellowship meals beginning at 5:45 PM with a time of devotional reflections.

Easter - We have an Easter morning fellowship meal at 8:30 AM and a 1½ hour Easter celebration service.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service - On December 24, our Christmas Eve service has special instrumental and vocal music selections. The service includes singing familiar Christmas hymns, the message, followed by a time of reflective silence once everyone lights their candle from the light of Christ.

Healing Service - Twice per year (See Church Calendar)
For those who are in need of any type of healing - physical, spiritual, emotional, financial, social, family, etc.; this simple service invites you to come as you are and be anointed with oil with the laying on of hands and intercessory prayer will be offered on your behalf. This service does not attempt to replace the work of physicians and the medical field. It is in keeping with James 5:14.

Special Ministries
Youth
Confirmation - About every three years we offer a Confirmation Class for youth ages 12 to 18. We take trips to experience a Catholic Mass, a Jewish Sabbath service, an African-American worship service, a mega church celebration service. We also visit missions like the Salvation Army. Can you tell we believe in hands on confirmation experience and not just some teaching from a book?

Missions
The church has a very strong missions program. We believe in actively participating and encourage serving in local, national and international ministries. Annually the church provides over $10000 in assistance to local community ministries and national and international missions throughout the world.

The Reflector Newsletter
The church publishes a monthly newsletter to reflect what has occurred, is occurring and is planned for the future in the church and our community. You can see our newsletter by clicking here.
